They may also directly induce DNA damage and alter immune responses, contributing to cancer development. Other types of gut bacteria may actually play a protective role. For example, by competing with pathogenic bacteria for nutrients and activating immune cells. Researchers have<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> been looking closely at why this could be, and one particular factor that they are interested in is the influence of the gut microbiome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies have described a link between the composition of the gut microbiome and the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapies. At the same time, the guts of non-responders were enriched with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacteroidales. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a further study found that the presence of certain gut bacteria, such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29302014\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bifidobacterium longum, Collinsella aerofaciens, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enterococcus faecium<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was linked to improved responses to immunotherapy in some cancer patients.
